T O P I C R E V I E WRobert PearlmanA first look at the International Space Station (ISS) Expedition 71 crew insignia. The initial Expedition 71 crew includes NASA astronauts Matthew Dominick, Michael Barratt, Jeanette Epps and Tracy Caldwell Dyson together with Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko, Nikolai Chub and Alexander Grebenkin. lucspaceAnother stunner from Blake Dumesnil, I guess.RussianBlake did also another version of the patch with names as well as its simplified version for onboard polos.KAPTECExtraordinary!Marwin2Is this a hypothetical Martian space vehicle on arrowhead on the left?Robert PearlmanIt appears to be a human eye looking to the right through a trio of scopes, hence the views of the micro and macroscopic universe that fill the background.IconDesign29Thank you for the kind words everyone. I worked with Mike Barratt on this design in a rather quick turnaround. The 71 crew wanted to put a bit of a different spin on this patch by focusing on the scientific side of ISS expeditions hence the variety of elements you see within the circles. After laying out the 71/array element and carrying that triangle through to the left side to balance out the points that extend past the circle on the right, I found that it formed this wonderful sort of "spotlight" over and around the ISS itself and all the science elements. That led me to designing the eye and microscope lenses on the left as a way to further show the human interaction with science aboard the ISS.There's a lot going on in this design but I think it successfully hit upon all the notes of what the crew was looking for and we're all excited with how this one turned out. — BlakeTomShape of patch reminds me of Soyuz MS-24.Robert PearlmanThe official description as released by NASA: For nearly a quarter of a century the International Space Station (ISS) has hosted crews and accommodated science experiments even as it has continued to evolve into the highly capable orbiting laboratory of today. With its unique vantage point, the ISS serves as an intersection for discoveries ranging from the vast, such as the search for dark matter and cosmological origins, to the near, such as detailed observation of our home planet and its atmosphere, to the microscopic, including behavior of microbial life, DNA sequencing, and molecular biology in the microgravity environment. The Expedition 71 patch celebrates this science as well as the thousands of multinational scientists and technicians that have contributed to numerous groundbreaking experiments. The ISS is the ultimate destination for the scientifically curious. The symbology represents onboard research into quantum behavior of novel states of matter, antibodies and immune function, the search for dark matter, flame and combustion physics, DNA expression, plant growth and root behavior, and direct earth observation. The human eye and microscope objectives at upper left form the apex of a cone of vision culminating in the Expedition number 71, and represents the deliberate and disciplined practice of scientific observation. Earth's moon and Mars are also depicted as next steps for exploration, with an anticipation of further rich scientific discovery using many techniques and skills honed aboard the ISS.Kevin T.
